Board and train is not magic

What a stay with us can do, what it cannot, and why the handover matters more than the days.

About five minutes

I run a board and train and I am going to spend this piece explaining its limits, which is a strange thing to do on your own website. Bear with me.

What it genuinely does

A good board and train buys you two things that are hard to get any other way.

Density. A dog gets more clean, correctly timed repetitions in ten days than most owners manage in six months, because the person doing them is not also cooking dinner and answering emails.

And a break in the rehearsal. If your dog has spent a year practising something you do not want, simply stopping that practice for a week and a half, in a place where the old triggers do not exist, is worth more than people expect.

That is real. It is not marketing. Ten days of that changes what is possible.

What it does not do

Your dog does not come back trained. Your dog comes back with something started, in my hands, in my environment.

The thing people quietly believe when they book one is that the dog is the problem and the dog is going away to be fixed. It is an understandable belief and every ad in this industry encourages it.

But behaviour is not stored in the dog like a file. It is held up by conditions, and most of the conditions live at your house. The floor plan, the routine, the door everyone comes through, the two humans running slightly different rules, the fifteen minutes of chaos at six o'clock.

Send the dog away and none of that changed. So a dog comes home with a clean new set of behaviours into the exact environment that built the old ones, and unless something on your side is different, the old ones win. Not immediately. Usually about three to five weeks in, which is long enough that people blame the dog rather than the handover.

The handover is the whole thing

This is where the money in this industry actually gets wasted, and it is worth being specific about it.

The failure is almost never that the training was bad. It is that a dog was handed back over with a demonstration and a handshake, and the owner watched somebody skilled do it and thought yes, that looks straightforward.

It is not straightforward. Timing is a physical skill and watching someone else do it teaches you almost nothing, in the same way that watching someone parallel park does not make you able to parallel park.

So the go home session should have you doing the work with your hands while somebody watches and corrects you, not the other way round. If a program hands your dog back with a demonstration, you have bought ten days of someone else getting good at your dog.

How to buy one properly

Ask these before you book anything, here or anywhere.

How many dogs at once? If they will not say, that is the answer. Three is different from twelve and everybody in the trade knows it.

What does the go home look like, exactly? You want to hear that you are holding the lead for most of it.

What is included afterwards and when? Something at around two weeks matters, because two weeks is when the first thing slips.

What will my dog not be able to do at the end? The answer to this tells you almost everything. Anyone who says nothing, or who lists only wins, is selling you a story. Anyone who can tell you plainly where the edges are has actually done this and is not afraid of you knowing.

So why do it at all

Because a floor built quickly and cleanly is genuinely valuable, and because most people cannot build one themselves while living their life, and there is no shame in that.

Just buy it for what it is. A strong start that you then have to carry, not a repair you can collect.

People who understand that get a great deal out of a board and train. People who do not spend three thousand dollars and end up back where they started, blaming a dog who did nothing wrong.

If you would rather just ask someone

Fifteen minutes on the phone.

Tell us the age, what is happening, and what you have already tried. You will get a straight answer about what we would do, whether or not that involves us.
